A favourite of visitors and locals for more than 25 years, Tmun (formerly at Xlendi) is nowadays tucked away on the marina road behind a row of colourful Gozitan fishing boats.
Leli is the supreme front-of-house man and oversees a team of outstandingly friendly and attentive waiting staff. Wife Jane, best fish cook on the island, created the dishes and son Paul has inherited her passion and developed her range. He works behind a window in full view of the diners – a sure sign of confidence. A choice of meat dishes is available but fish has always been the speciality, usually grilled, al sale (baked in salt) or cartoccio (in foil with gozo olive oil and herbs). And with local fishermen constantly padding barefoot across the street to deliver their daily catch it could hardly be fresher. The bouillabaisse, served for two to share, has been a constant preference for regulars. As has Jane’s delightful cheesecake and the array of home-made ice creams.
The new location means that Maltese regulars who used to drive to Xlendi for lunch can now leave their cars in Cirkewwa and walk the hundred yards or so from the ferry.
